About the Event

Calling all artists and creatives to join this full-day retreat where you will explore and discover how to tap into your inner artist and be the best you can be. Join me at my Niagara-on-the-Lake studio where we will learn some of the main objectives to creating good composition paired with choosing and applying medium in a confident and authentic way. We will not be painting specific paintings, but exploring different methods, brush technique and applications as studies and workbook notes. This class is ideally suited for those who have some knowledge of colour theory and drawing but want to further their techniques as an artist.  No lugging of paints! Professional quality artists materials, GOLDEN Artist Colors paints and mediums are provided as well as archival quality papers and canvas material, which can be easily packed and shipped if required. The studio is spacious however registration is limited to 10 people in person, and 10 more who can participate online. Outdoor painting may be an option, weather permitting. Most demonstrations will be done in acrylic paint, and some may be done in oil or watercolour paints. Oil paints are only permitted if used with non-toxic gel medium or no medium at all. This is a fun and encouraging environment with a different spin on learning both intuitively and using fundamentals. You will work towards creating free, loose and confident work which speaks to your unique style as an artist. All participants will receive an Artist Pack with professional quality materials to use and take home.

10:00AM - 11AM

Artist Talk and Demonstration with Participation: I will be showing participants some affective warm-up techniques and brushwork to get started. We will focus on a still life together in drawing medium, followed by bold brushwork on paper.

You will also learn how to organize your palette and lay in an underpaintings before adding colour . This demonstration will include information on brush technique, linear and atmospheric perspective and composition including creating mood and meaning with our painting and how to avoid being overly dependent on our photographs. I will provide some examples of paintings of the area so we can learn from examples and plan our approach before we begin to paint.

We will work in stations carrying out different activities which aim to bring out the innate style of individual artists. My goal is to let your own style show through with confidence while offering some fundamental direction.

12:15 - 1PM

Break for lunch: We will enjoy a healthy farm-to-table lunch and refreshments away from our paintings. Lunch is provided by our very own cook and will include Niagara Region wine. Weather permitting we will eat outside around the property.
