Sandra Iafrate

Canadian artist Sandra Iafrate began work in communications and journalism in the 1980s, later taking up art as a hobby while raising a family. She has studied art for the past 15 years through various art schools and workshops across Canada and abroad. She has learned from renowned artist Nancy Hughes of Calgary, Alberta beginning her training in realistic drawing and watercolour, and later took up oil painting with master painter the late Kevin Taylor in Melbourne, Australia. Sandra continued to attend part-time studies in classical drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art when she moved to Toronto in 2003.

“I’m very fortunate to have been trained by such talented painters who have learned the dying trade of classical art and have passed along their wisdom so I could understand fully how to approach the painting of subjects. That understanding has allowed me to paint freely in order to achieve a certain vision. ”

Sandra is a member of the North York Visual Artists, North Toronto Group of Artists and the Franklin Carmichael Group of Artists. Her work has been exhibited at the Fairlawn Neighbourhood Community Centre in Toronto and various Plein-air exhibitions in Niagara Falls, Oakville, Uxbridge and Toronto, and The Scollard Street Gallery in Yorkville, Toronto.

Working with the Franklin Carmichael Group and the Toronto District School Board, Sandra is part of a special curriculum committee, initiating a pilot project for arts enrichment for cluster schools in Toronto. Sandra also volunteers as a docent for the new Art Gallery of Ontario opening November 2008.

Sandra creates her own original works in all mediums and she enjoys teaching the fundamentals of drawing and painting to youths and adults, showing them ‘how to see’.
